Chapter 19

Tyrone awoke the next morning, wound around Ella’s back. For the longest, he’d told himself he needed to get curtains for the windows, but at the moment he was happy he hadn’t. The light coming in from the outdoors illuminated the room and gave him an excellent view of her body.

She’d slipped back on her underwear, and he’d put on a pair of boxers to sleep in. His face was buried in her thick hair, which had come undone at some point during the night and lay between them like a pile of shiny black silk.

He took a breath. Her hair smelled crisp and clean, like lemon and sage. He imagined waking up like this every morning, with her as the first sight when he opened his eyes, wrapped around her—

Whoa. His mind skidded to a halt before leaping off a cliff of crazy thoughts.

He eased his arm, a little numb from where she lay on top of it, from under her. He liked Ella, a lot. But in all honesty, he hadn’t considered a future with another woman since his divorce. Work was a priority, and marriage had left a bitter taste in his mouth after his wife’s betrayal.

Carefully, Tyrone smoothed his fingertips down the soft, deep brown skin of her back, but he wasn’t as careful as he thought, because she woke up. She stretched and looked back at him, squinting against the light. “What time is it?”

“Early. A little after eight,” he replied.

She brushed hair out of her face, not the least bit self-conscious of the sheet that hung around her waist and exposed her breasts and dark nipples. Looking at her now, all he could do was remember how incredible she looked riding him the second time they made love, those same breasts jostling right before he grabbed them in his hands and plucked them one at a time into his mouth. His body still hummed from the memory of her hands and mouth on his skin. There was nothing reserved about Ella in the midst of lovemaking.

“I should get up,” she said.

To be honest, she looked rather tired, as if she could sleep for a couple more hours.

Tyrone got up. “Why don’t you stay in bed. I’m going for my morning run, and on the way back, I’ll pick up breakfast for us.”

“Are you sure?”

“Relax and go back to sleep. I’ll be back in an hour and a half or so.”

She plopped back down onto the bed and pulled the sheet beneath her armpits. “Well, if you insist.” She giggled. “I always take advantage of the times I have alone. The girls sometimes come into my room early, before the nanny gets to the apartment. I’m going to take you up on this offer to sleep a little late.”

Tyrone tugged on a pair of jogging pants and a sweatshirt, pulled on his tennis shoes, and then walked over to the bed. He trailed his fingertips through her hair, a wave of tenderness coming over him.
